Death. The most common word of the day. Countless deaths come our way each day. We pass them by as we move on with life. No death is of significance to us anymore. Unless it is the death of a kin. Our tears are a privilege saved for the few that are dear to us.

Yet, some young fools vow to save a dying soul. A large sum is needed to prevent this terrible death. Students give away their tutoring salary. Teenage day-laborers of a shrimp farm donate their entire day’s salary of 25 taka (less than 50 cents). Professionals defy fatigue to work relentlessly to save this life… or at least to delay the inevitable.

Why?

To repay our blood-debt.

AJSM Khaled was only 18 when he took up arms to free his country. Once the war was over, he joined in the effort to rebuild his country. His contribution to the garments sector – the chief source of foreign currency – has been most significant. He is one of the few who have made unique contribution to the academic study of this field. His textbooks on Garments Technology are taught in many universities.

Despite his illness, he is still producing specialists for this sector. To this day, he teaches Garments Technology in a private university. The vice of cancer is yet to deter him from his goal of creating a skilled youth for a bright tomorrow.

Do we not have any duties to him in return for his service to this country? Why would he be alone in his fight against cancer? Having him for even a year more can give the country some specialists in a thrust sector. This is why are with him.

We pledge to keep him alive for as long as well can. Our urge to you is very simple – be with us.

The disease is very rare. In America, there are only about six hundred patients out of 330 million people. As a result, the amount of research on this disease is insufficient. Very few doctors or facilities are there that can treat this disease. My physician is yet to treat a patient with this disease. There is a variety of choices, but it is very difficult for my physician to suggest the best course of treatment for me.

Tests in India have revealed my disease to be a kind of lymphoma. When our red blood cells become malignant and cancerous, it is called leukemia. Cancer in the white blood cells is called lymphoma. Famous singer Sabina Yasmin was suffering from a kind of lymphoma. Following a timely trip to Singapore and proper treatment, she is in good health now. Mine is a similar kind of lymphoma (T-cell lymphoma).

My white blood cells have become malignant. This is a very treacherous disease. It comes to each patient in a different guise, making it difficult to diagnose. As a result, it is often discovered at a very late stage. After 17 years of suffering, it has been identified as T-cell lymphoma. Some visiting physicians from Singapore diagnosed me, and told me to go to Singapore for treatment.

AJSM Khaled has been a patient of mine for the past three years. His treatment is limited by the lack of required facilities. We are currently treating him with interferon and PUVA photo therapy. There still is no facility for Total-Body Electron Beam Therapy. This therapy is very important to affect his limb nodes. He needs treatments such as total-body electron beam therapy and extra-varcolar photo therapy. These as well as the use of other drugs (*find and insert proper term) should be administered in a better facility. We still lack development in these areas of medical service. Singapore is a very, very good center. America is also a place with very good facilities.

Dr. Khaled is a prominent personality and a renowned teacher. He has worked with Shanta-Mariam Institute of Creative Technology for a long time. There is no specialist in this area in Bangladesh. For 25 years, he has worked in many garments factories. It is a matter of great sorrow that he is suffering from a fatal disease such as cancer. The university is with him in his struggle. We have all donated a day’s salary for his recovery. The faculty, staff, and the university foundation have extended him some financial support.
