The AP Dhaka Office reporter Julhas Alam is providing wrong and twisted information in his reports on the recent protest in Bangladesh. In his recent report on Feb. 8 “Bangladesh Protest Calls for Death for War Crimes” Mr. Alam wrote:

“The protesters in Dhaka urged Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to review a verdict sentencing a senior leader of Bangladesh's largest Islamic party, Jamaat-e-Islami, to life in prison for killings and other crimes.”

However, the truth is Sheikh Hasina does not have any authority to review verdicts given by the International Criminal Tribunal (ICT) and no one is requesting her to do so. People are protesting spontaneously against this verdict in the streets as they want no less than a death sentence to these war criminals.

Also, Jamaat-e-Islami is a “fundamentalist” Islamist party in Bangladesh, whose objective is to establish Sharia Law in the country. Most of their leaders are war criminals and acted as collaborators of the Pakistan Army in 1971, and involved in genocide, killing, rape and other heinous crimes. Although they were in coalition with the previous government, the argument Mr. Alam was trying to put in his article was not true.

He wrote another article on Feb 6- “Protests hit Bangladesh after war crimes verdict”, where the title and the images used in the article were totally misleading with respect to the content he provided. Mr. Alam mostly discussed about the fairness of the trail and the strike ordered by the Jamaat-e-Islami in his article, but most of the images used were from the Shahbag protest.

We appreciate if you would investigate his articles and take immediate action as these are giving wrong messages to public and the world media about this people’s protest in Bangladesh.

এএফপি'র এই রিপোর্টটাতেও কৌশলে মিথ্যাচার করা হয়েছে। এখানে বলছেঃ

ট্রাইবুনাল নিয়ে এই মিথ্যাচারের জন্য এএফপি'র স্থানীয় প্রতিনিধিকে ট্রাইবুনালে তলব করা যেতে পারে অথবা আদালত অবমাননার মামলা করা যেতে পারে। বাচ্চু রাজাকারের আসল পরিচয় না দিয়ে তাকে টেলিভিশনে ইসলাম প্রচারক হিসাবে দেখানোর মাধ্যমে সংবাদদাতার ছাগুত্ব স্পষ্ট হয়ে গেছে। এএফপি-কে এই ব্যাপারগুলোতে প্রতিবাদপত্র পাঠানো দরকার।

গত কয়েকদিন ধরে বিদেশী সংবাদমাধ্যমগুলোতে জামায়াতবান্ধব প্রচারণার বিরুদ্ধে অনলাইন অ্যাকটিভিস্টদের যথেষ্ট ঘাম ঝরাতে হয়েছে (এখনো হচ্ছে)। আমার প্রশ্ন হচ্ছে, মিডিয়াগুলোর বৃহদাংশ কি বাই ডিফল্ট ছাগুবান্ধব নাকি এদের সংবাদদাতাদের খুব সহজে কেনা যায়?

ধন্যবাদ টেমপ্লেটের জন্য। সামান্য পরিবর্তন করে ইসলামিস্ট এর আগে "তথাকথিত" এবং উদ্দেশ্য এর জায়গায় "যে কোন তরিকায়" বাংলাদেশের পলিটিকাল ক্ষমতা "দখল" যোগ করে দিয়েছি। শাহবাগের ছবির সাথে "যেখানে হাজারো মানুষ জামাতের বিরুদ্ধে দাঁড়িয়েছে" এবং একদম শেষে এ সব রিপোর্টের কারণে "এপির রিপোর্টিং এর সততা ও মান সম্পর্কে অত্যন্ত নেতিবাচক ধারণা পাচ্ছে পাঠক" যোগ করা হয়েছে।

আশা করি কেউ কিছু মনে করবেন না। জামাতকে ইসলামিস্ট , ফান্ডামেন্টালিস্ট কিছুই বলতে রাজি না আমি। তারা নরঘাতক, এবং অরগানাইজড ক্রিমিনাল গ্রুপ। অবশ্য ফ্যানাটিক বলা যায় হয়ত।

Dear Editor,
I am writing this letter to protest the wrong and misleading information being reported by your Dhaka office reporter Julhas Alam. Bangladesh is now at a crossroads where the perpetrators of crimes against humanity during the 1971 war of independence are being prosecuted in special tribunals.

The people particularly the younger generation of Bangladesh are demanding tougher punishments for the convicted war criminals proportionate with the atrocities committed by these individuals. An unprecedented movement has recently been initiated by our youth in protest of the apparently soft sentencing received by an accused (Abdul Quader Mulla) who has been convicted of crimes as grave as genocide.

Mr Alam has written a report on Feb 8 titled “Bangladesh Protest Calls for Death for War Crimes” focusing on this movement. He wrote “The protesters in Dhaka urged Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to review a verdict sentencing a senior leader of Bangladesh's largest Islamic party, Jamaat-e-Islami, to life in prison for killings and other crimes.” Although the protesters are demanding tougher sentencing for all the accused they are not asking the PM to review the judgement as it falls outside her prerogative. As a matter of fact, no PM of any democratic country is able to alter a verdict of any court of law. The Bangladeshi government however needs to amend the International Crimes Tribunals Act to permit appeal against any unsatisfactory sentencing. Protesters believe that without a provision of appeal justice will not be served at least in the case of Kader Mulla. In view of this I assume the aforementioned statement by Mr Alam is extremely unfortunate attempt to distort the truth and undermine the credibility of the trial process.

Mr Alam’s characterization of Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) is also incomplete to say the least. It may well be the largest Islamist party of Bangladesh but it still enjoys a marginal level of support in the country. Most of its top rank leaders are infamous for their role during the independence war and are widely known for collaborating with the Pakistani Army in committing heinous crimes including genocide. Protesters are therefore demanding a ban on JI and its affiliated organizations that the reporter has failed to highlight. Furthermore, the lack of any description of the serious charges against Mulla in the report is another glaring omission.

In a previous article on Feb 6 titled “Protests hit Bangladesh after war crimes verdict”, Mr Alam had solely focused on the strike called by JI to protest sentencing of Qudar Mulla. However, in the same article he had included several photographs of the protesters from Shahbag who are fighting for an entirely opposite cause, demanding death penalty for Mulla. Such a report is not only misleading but also reveals a complete disregard for the facts.

I have found the recent reporting by Julhas Alam to be biased which is against the acceptable journalistic norms and obviously does not meet AP’s standard. Therefore, an investigation on his articles followed by prompt actions to stop feeding misleading information to the World media will be highly appreciated.
